AI, Be Less Human: The Risks of Replicating Our Cognitive Biases

Replicating human biases causes Generative AI systems to be less accurate, fail in embarrassing ways, or be outright illegal. This session covers how a handful of common biases reflect themselves in LLM based systems: Stereotypes (gender, race, ethnicity, religion, and origin), social biases (sycophancy, ego bias, self-assessment), and professional biases (anchoring effect, confirmation bias, framing effect, order effects). Open-source tools that can test for, measure, and in some cases correct for such biases are discussed. Finally, we’ll cover the criticality in addressing such issues before deploying Generative AI systems to production, why common techniques such as guardrails and prompt engineering do not fully address the problem, and what needs to be built next to do so.
