Lead Data Scientist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
Vasileios Stathias is a Lead Data Scientist at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Department of Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology at the University of Miami. Vasileios is leading the development of a multi-omics data portal for the FAIR management, automated processing, and intuitive analysis of high-throughput research data generated at Sylvester. In addition, his research focuses on leveraging data-driven approaches for the identification of novel cancer therapies and is leading multiple research projects in two national cancer consortia (NIH LINCS and NCI CPTAC). For his B.Sc. degree, Vasileios attended the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Democritus University of Thrace and obtained his Ph.D. degree in the Department of Human Genetics and Genomics at the University of Miami.

Despite the significant progress in the understanding, detection, and treatment of cancer, the global burden continues to grow, with one in 5 people developing cancer during their lifetime and one in 8 men and one in 11 women dying from the disease. Recent advances in biomedical technology and automation have enabled the generation of massive amounts of diverse data and are providing unprecedented opportunities for the acceleration of cancer research through big data and artificial intelligence methods. This talk will highlight various data science strategies applied to the management and analysis of large-scale cancer datasets with the goal of facilitating innovative data-driven research and developing novel efficacious therapies.
